Why do I need headphones?
Laptop and phone speakers barely reproduce the highest frequencies and add room reflections. Headphones give each ear a clean, direct signal so the threshold is far more meaningful.
Can this damage my hearing?
Not at a sensible volume. Keep it at a comfortable level and never raise it to force hearing a tone — high-frequency pure tones can be harsh and prolonged loud exposure is what harms hearing.
