Find album info and cover art for your favorite records
Our free online album finder is made for music lovers, record collectors and anyone who needs album information fast, whether for a review or for tagging a music library. Look up when a record first came out, find an album from one of its songs, browse an artist’s discography by year, play official 30-second previews or save the cover art at full resolution. Every album card draws on MusicBrainz, the open music encyclopedia, and on Apple’s iTunes Search API, and you don’t need an account.
A free album finder: search for any record and get its card with cover art, release year, first-release date, genre, full tracklist and official 30-second previews. Search just an artist to browse their whole discography.
Where the data comes from
The card combines two open sources: the iTunes Search API (cover art, tracklists and previews, always served from Apple's servers) and MusicBrainz, the open music encyclopedia (original release date and album type). Our server only acts as a cached proxy so the tool is fast and respectful with both APIs — no account or API key involved, and nothing about you is stored.
How to use the album finder
The album finder works with the name of an album, an artist or a song, and pulls up the record's details in a few seconds.
- Search for the album, artist or song, or click or tap one of the sample artists under the search box.
- Open an album to see its year, its original release date, the tracks with their running times and the official 30-second previews.
- Press the discography button (“See the full Pink Floyd discography” on a Pink Floyd album) to get the artist's releases sorted by year and split by type.
- Download the cover art at the highest resolution Apple has, from 600 to 6,000 pixels depending on the album.
- Share the card. Every album and discography has its own link, and “Copy card to share” copies the album with its tracklist and a link to the card, ready to paste into a forum, a chat or a blog.
An artist's full discography, by year
The full discography splits releases by type and sorts each group by original release date. That information comes from MusicBrainz, an open music database kept up by its users, and releases that are also on Apple Music open in their own card with previews. Anything Apple sells that doesn't match a MusicBrainz release goes at the end. It's usually the same record under another title, a regional edition or a record by another artist with the same name.
MusicBrainz lists 210 official albums, EPs and singles by Pink Floyd, and only 13 are studio albums, from The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967) to The Endless River (2014). The rest are 98 live releases (70 albums and 28 singles), 37 compilations, 48 studio singles, 4 soundtracks (More and Obscured by Clouds among them), 3 EPs, 6 demos and an interview. Dates come from the first edition, so you get the album release date even when a store lists a later one.
If MusicBrainz doesn't recognize the artist or doesn't respond, the tool says so and shows only the artist's Apple Music releases, with the store dates. For an artist with more than 500 releases on MusicBrainz, it shows 500, which can come from any period, and tells you.
| Release type | How it's defined | Pink Floyd example |
|---|---|---|
| Single | One to three songs, each under 10 minutes (Apple) | “Money,” 1973 |
| EP | Four to six songs, or one to three if one runs 10 minutes or more, with 30 minutes or less in total either way (Apple) | London 1966/1967, 1995 |
| Studio album | Anything that isn't a single or an EP, recorded in the studio with new material | Wish You Were Here, 1975 |
| Live | Recorded live (MusicBrainz) | Delicate Sound of Thunder, 1988 |
| Compilation | Recordings from different periods gathered together, released before or not (MusicBrainz) | Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd, 2001 |
| Soundtrack | Music for a film or a show (MusicBrainz) | More, 1969 |
The single and EP rules come from the Apple Music style guide, and Apple adds “ - Single” or “ - EP” to those titles. The other types come from MusicBrainz.
How to download high-resolution album art
Open the album card and click “Download cover art.” The tool asks Apple for the largest version and saves it under the artist and album name. How large it gets depends on what the label gave Apple, so some covers stop at 600 pixels and others reach 6,000. Once it's done, the button tells you the size of yours.
| What you need it for | Suggested size | In the albums we measured |
|---|---|---|
| Tagging your music files | 600 px, our own rule of thumb. It's the size the album card shows, and the button downloads the largest | All four have it, and at 600 px they weigh 56 to 94 KB |
| A TV or a large player screen | 1,080 px (Full HD) or 2,160 px (4K) | All but Signos clear 1,080, and Motomami and DAMN. clear 2,160 |
| Printing a CD booklet cover (4.7 × 4.7 in at 300 ppi) | 1,417 px | SEP7IMO DIA, Motomami and DAMN. |
| Printing an LP jacket (12.375 in at 300 ppi) | 3,713 px | Only DAMN., at about 485 ppi, while Motomami stops at about 240 |
The rights belong to the artists or the label, so the cover art is for your personal library.
What album is this song on?
To find out what album a song is on, search for the artist and the title together, such as “Pink Floyd Money.” With two words or more, the search also looks through songs, and every album that turns up because of the one you typed gets a label like Includes “Money” or Includes “Money (Live)”. You'll usually get several, because a well-known song sits on the original album, on compilations and on live albums. Among the results for “Money” are The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), the Echoes compilation and the live albums Delicate Sound of Thunder and Pulse.
To play the full album, the card links to Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music and Deezer, and to a search for its editions on Discogs. If you're torn between services, our music streaming quality comparison shows what each one delivers.
Frequently asked questions
Where does the data come from?
Cover art, tracklists and previews come from the public iTunes Search API; the first-release date and album type come from MusicBrainz, the open music encyclopedia. Results are cached on our server for a few days to be fast and respect both APIs' limits.
Can I listen to full songs?
No. You hear the official 30-second previews that Apple offers publicly. For the full song there is a direct link to the album on Apple Music.
Why can't I find an album?
The search runs against the iTunes catalogue of your store (Spain for the Spanish version). Some editions, regional releases or very obscure albums may be missing — try fewer words, the original title, or just the artist name.
Is anything about me stored?
No personal data. Searched albums are kept anonymously in a temporary server cache (so repeat lookups are instant), nothing else.
How do I find an artist's full discography?
Search for the artist and press the full discography button. Studio albums, EPs, live releases, compilations and singles each get their own group, sorted by the original release date MusicBrainz records, and anything on Apple Music opens in its own card. If MusicBrainz fails or does not know the artist, you get only the Apple Music releases.
Where can I get high-resolution album art?
Press “Download cover art” on the album card to save the largest version the label gave Apple, from 600 to 6,000 pixels depending on the album. Soda Stereo's Signos stops at 600 px, ROSALÍA's Motomami reaches 3,000, and Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. goes up to 6,000. The rights belong to the artists or the label, so use it for your personal library.
What album is this song on?
Type the artist and the title into the search box (“Pink Floyd Money,” for example), and the album finder labels the albums that include that song. You usually get several, from the original album to compilations and live albums. A one-word search only looks for albums.
What is the difference between an album, an EP and a single?
Apple tells them apart by song count and length. A single has one to three songs, each under 10 minutes. An EP has four to six songs, or one to three if one of them reaches 10 minutes, and either way runs 30 minutes or less. Everything else is an album. MusicBrainz adds the types that don't depend on length, like live albums, compilations and soundtracks.
Can I download full discographies?
No. The album card shows the release details and the official 30-second previews, and links to Apple Music, Spotify, YouTube Music and Deezer so you can play the full album legally. Sites offering full discographies to download usually share copies without the artists' permission.
