How does it detect distortion without lab gear?
The test track is synthesized with a deliberate spectral gap: it has bass and kick below 150 Hz and hi-hats above 5 kHz, but NOTHING between 300 Hz and 3 kHz. When a speaker starts clipping, its harmonics land exactly in that empty band — so energy appearing there, relative to the signal bands, is a distortion fingerprint the mic can catch reliably.
Why scenarios instead of watts or decibels?
Because a browser cannot measure absolute SPL (phone mics are uncalibrated), and honestly, “20 watts” doesn't tell you if the garden party will work. The app measures the clean margin your speaker achieves over the room's noise floor at ~2 m and maps it to everyday scenarios. It's an estimate — a fun and useful one.
Is the test track copyrighted music?
No. It's generated live in your browser with oscillators and noise (kick, bass and hi-hats), so it's royalty-free by construction — and, crucially, its spectrum is fully known, which is what makes the distortion detection work.
What if it never shows distortion?
Either your speaker has headroom to spare at that volume (great!) or the level was too low for the mic to score it. Make sure you raise the source volume near its maximum, keep the phone ~2 m away and try again.
Can I damage my speaker with this test?
Short bursts of distortion while finding the limit won't harm a healthy speaker, but don't keep it playing distorted for long — sustained clipping is what burns tweeters. Once the warning lights up, back the volume off a notch: that's your speaker's real-world clean limit.
