The sound quality of a vinyl record depends—more than many people realize—on the record player—also known as a turntable—that plays it. A poorly built turntable degrades sound quality and can accelerate vinyl wear. That’s why there are noticeable differences between inexpensive models and units designed with materials and technical solutions that minimize such interference.
Lightweight chassis and poorly machined tonearms are often to blame for most sound-related issues. A platter made of dense wood or solid metal better dampens vibrations; a tonearm with tighter machining tolerances keeps the stylus in the groove without deviation; a decent align the cartridge properly converts groove variations into a more accurate signal. Ultimately, these are mechanical components interacting with a very small physical signal, and the more control there is over these variables, the cleaner the playback becomes.
Components That Make a Difference in a Turntable
The tonearm is the part that requires the highest level of precision during manufacturing. In budget models, it suffers from excessive friction or imperfect geometry, which results in distortion and tracking errors when the stylus reaches the inner parts of the record. Higher-quality tonearms compensate for this with better balance, finer bearings, and materials that ensure smooth, consistent movement.
The cartridge—the transducer that converts movement into electricity—also plays a role. There are MM (moving magnet) and MC (moving coil) cartridges; the latter tend to cost more and, in some cases, offer superior detail, but there are very decent MM cartridges that are sufficient for most listeners.
The stylus, for its part, can have a simple conical profile—which is inexpensive and gets the job done—but those with elliptical, Shibata, or Microline profiles extract more information from the groove and allow for a more nuanced listening experience. The Shibata stylus offers a more natural, warm sound with full midrange and bass, while the Microline stylus brings out more detail in the treble, greater transparency, and greater fidelity to the original contour of the record groove—ideal for systems with transparent components.
Rotational stability is another factor that should not be overlooked. Inexpensive motors can cause slow or rapid fluctuations in speed, which prevents long notes from maintaining their pitch consistently. Many mid-range and high-end turntables use belt drives to isolate the platter from the motor, and some electronically controlled direct-drive designs offer excellent precision. Shielded wiring and proper grounding are also important for reducing hum and hiss.
Investment and Longevity
You don’t have to break the bank to upgrade. Switching from a turntable that costs less than 150 euros to one in the 500–700 range usually represents a noticeable improvement in build quality and sound. However, once you reach certain very high price points—such as 2,000–5,000 euros—the cost-benefit ratio decreases; there are high-end systems whose price is many times that of the average model, while the audible improvement may be marginal to the average listener.
What you notice when you listen: The difference isn’t always dramatic, but you’ll hear less background noise, clearer separation between instruments, better definition in the high frequencies, and more controlled low frequencies. On higher-end systems, the music flows more naturally; on budget systems, everything sounds more compressed and distorted.
On the other hand, better-built turntables allow for repairs and upgrades. A cheap turntable is practically disposable, whereas a well-designed one lets you change the cartridge, adjust the tonearm, replace parts, and—with proper maintenance—last for decades. So if you plan to get serious about vinyl, that durability ends up making more sense than buying and discarding cheap units over and over again.
At the same time, don’t forget about the rest of the system. To achieve balanced performance, it’s best to pair the turntable with a high-quality cartridge, a good phono preamp, and speakers with an appropriate frequency response.
