Here is our own read, and why hour counts never line up: earpads are not measured in hours, they are measured in conditions. A turntable stylus wears mechanically, so counting groove hours makes sense. An earpad fails through chemistry – hydrolysis of the polyurethane – plus foam fatigue, and neither one waits for you to press play: a pad degrades in the drawer too. On an open-back the effect is small by design – the HD 490 PRO measured with different degrees of seal barely shifts unless you lift the pad and open a substantial gap. Pad thickness rules the mids and treble
